Long-View Recognized as Leader in School Innovation

At Long-View we work hard to impact the world of education, not just for the children and families we serve at our micro school, but across the world. We have a particular area of expertise and innovation in the discipline of mathematics, and our math team has worked hard to spread our approach to educators across the country. And recently, we were nationally recognized (twice!) as a leader in school innovation by Transcend, a national nonprofit that supports school communities to create and spread extraordinary, equitable learning environments.

More about Transcend

The organization was founded on a belief that we must reimagine schooling, using a community-driven approach, so all children can realize their infinite potential. Transcend pursues its mission by partnering directly with schools on design journeys while also sharing powerful models, tools, and insights across the sector. At Long-View, we have been hosting visiting schools and leaders from Transcend since 2017, and are proud to be recognized by them in The Innovative Models Exchange and in The Canopy Project.

The Innovative Models Exchange

Long-View Micro School’s math program is featured in The Innovative Models Exchange — a free, searchable library to drive innovation for schools.

Despite innovation across nearly every sector of society, a one-size-fits all approach has governed mainstream schooling in America for more than a century. Identifying learning models that have the potential to drive innovation is key to making substantial changes in schooling. The Innovative Models Exchange is designed for communities inspired to innovate but in need of a solution that doesn’t necessitate ground-up innovation—they can instead learn from and borrow from amazing innovations from across the country.

We are proud our model was selected among this inaugural set of innovative designs, and we are also proud that we were only one of three models selected for mathematics. In fact, of these three models, one is a tutoring model and another is adaptive technology. Ours is the only mathematics model selected that relies upon a discourse-rich environment that might be found in a classroom.

The Canopy Project

Long-View is also honored to be featured in the Canopy Project, a collective research project that enables educators to better understand how schools are innovating across the US.

This national study launched in 2019 as a national effort to highlight equitable, student-centered innovation in K–12. Last week, the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) and Transcend released this annual report featuring new and updated information about 161 innovative school designs, including Long-View.

Explore the data portal and new report, Innovation in Action: How Creative Schools are Designing a More Equitable and Student-centered System at www.canopyschools.org.

In a historically challenging moment for K-12 education, elevating examples of learning environments designing for equity and student-centered learning is more important than ever. We are happy to provide inspiration to other educators and we hope our model can be an optimistic view of what’s possible in education.
