Each admissions season, we take great pleasure in meeting families interested in re-imagining school.

Welcome to Long-View! We look forward to getting to know you and your child.

Our admissions process is designed to help families and the school get to know each other. Throughout the process, you’ll interact with our teaching team, as we do not employ an admissions department. We strive to keep things as simple as possible. If your research leads you to believe Long-View is the right fit for your child, you’ll fill out an on-line application and your child will attend an assessment day, called Demo Day.

Questions? Reach out to us at admissions@long-view.com.

Who should apply?

Long-View kids are ready to learn. They enjoy getting their hands dirty, thinking about new ideas, and meeting people who challenge them. They are persistent with projects and like to work alongside others.

Our best-fit students have strong self-regulation skills, a positive identity as a learner, and are curious and enthusiastic. They have solid reading skills and are excited to be at a school where they will learn to think and be challenged. All Long-View kids show evidence of intellectual motivation and aptitude for rigorous academics. Some Long-View kids already have a love of mathematics, science, and/or coding but others have never had a chance to develop a strong identity in these areas and their parents know that Long-View is the place this can all change.

Long-View families are serious about supporting their children in becoming lifelong learners, and recognize that traditional models of school are no longer effective in producing learning that prepares children to contend with the complexities of the world in which we live. Long-View families very purposefully choose this community because they regard high-quality instruction as essential, and value their child learning within a culture that focuses on intellectual curiosity and collaboration.

We accept applications for 2nd-8th grades.

Note: Up-to-date vaccinations are required for all admitted students. And we also appreciate parents sharing their child’s Covid-19 vaccination card.

How can I get to know Long-View and whether my child is a good fit?

Long-View has a unique approach to education. Our website contains an overview, but you can also use social media to get to know us. We use Instagram as a daily news feed for our current parents and we suggest you mine through current and past posts to get a sense of our day-to-day activities, the ethos of the school, and the types of lessons and conversations that make up the Long-View experience.

The best way to get to know Long-View is to attend a Parent Observation Day to see the school in action. Parent Observation Days are offered on select school days through the middle part of the year and are 90 minutes. You’ll hear us talk more about the Long-View model and the assumptions that underlie learning at Long-View, and we’ll observe classes in action. This is the best way to understand the Long-View experience and see what makes it special.

How do I visit the school?

The avenue for visiting Long-View is a Parent Observation Day. These are 90 minute group sessions for adults only. We will be spending significant time in Long-View classrooms — as you can imagine, it really impacts the learning environment if toddlers or babies are in tow; thus we ask that only adults attend these sessions.

We do not do “tours” of the school or Parent Observation Days for individuals. We feel strongly that we need to limit the number of people in our space to honor our current students’ needs, as we have open classrooms filled with learners hard at work. Thus, we have limited spots for Parent Observation Days and cannot accommodate everyone. We suggest you sign-up as soon as the registration opens and add your name to the waitlists once every Observation Day is full.

Parent Observation Days give parents who are curious about the school and considering filling out an application a chance to walk in and out of classrooms and see the Long-View approach and what makes our school so special. We'll start with a brief overview of our model and our philosophy and then together we will observe the learners as they work in their academic blocks, punctuating our observations with discussions around what the kids are learning and how the pedagogy supports that learning. You'll leave with a strong sense of our culture, the level of the academics, the depth of understanding the learners are working toward, how central discourse is to our pedagogy, and why our kids love learning.

Parent Observation Days: October 24 at 12pm, November 7 at 12pm, November 28 at 12pm, December 7 at 12pm, January 16 at 12pm

What is the application process?

The Long-View application process is relatively simple.

To apply to Long-View:

1. fill out an application for your child

2. submit the application fee to complete your child's application file

3. look for an email for us about your child’s Demo Day, Long-View's version of a "testing day" (we will contact you after you've submitted the application and fee and will assign your child to a time block on a Demo Day)

4. sign up for our newsletter (see footer of this page) so you don’t miss any important information or updates on Long-View

We do not accept outside test scores, teacher recommendations, or report cards, as they rarely predict who will thrive at Long-View. Instead, we place an emphasis on getting to know you and your child through the application, Parent Observation Days, and Demo Days. We take the application very seriously, as it provides our first opportunity to get to know your child and your family and to see whether there is a good fit between Long-View and your child. Please answer as fully and honestly as you can. Applications that are submitted from October 1, 2023 - January 19, 2024 are not kept in a rank order according to date received; thus, we encourage you to research the school before filling out the application so that you can be sure your answers on the application are thorough.

What happens on a Demo Day? And how does my child get a look at the school?

Like everything at Long-View, we are thinking differently about how the admissions process goes, and how a "testing day" looks and feels for a child. Long-View's version of a "testing day" for applicants is called Demo Day.

All applicants are scheduled for a Demo Day session lasting approximately 90 minutes. During Demo Day, we run a demo or demonstration lesson for a small group of children and our assessment of each child's readiness for Long-View occurs within the context of the lesson.

In addition, because we are doing a “demonstration lesson,” your child will come away from Demo Day with a better understanding of what Long-View is like. Demo Days occur on days in which our own students are not at school; thus, your child will not see a “regular day” in action. However, the demonstration lesson is preceded by a short tour, and we will talk about why the Long-View environment looks different. Before starting the demonstration lesson, which gives kids a feel for how it feels to learn at Long-View, we’ll talk about learning at Long-View and how, for example, we often have discussions with many people sharing ideas, but do so without the typical classroom norm of raising hands. Most kids leave Demo Day feeling like they have a good idea of what Long-View is like.

After the Demo Day, some —but not all— applicants may be invited for a Shadow Day. On a Shadow Day, older children are invited to spend a 1/2 day immersed in the Long-View community and younger children are scheduled for a shorter visit. During this time, we observe how your son or daughter integrates him/herself into an academic learning community and we conduct academic assessments in order to make final admissions decisions. Please don't read too much into whether or not your child is asked for a Shadow Day; this decision is not only based on individual children, but can be related to group dynamics, age levels, and whether a Demo Day visit provided all the necessary information.

Demo Days: Friday, January 26, 2024 and Friday, February 2, 2024

  • Demo Days occur on two Fridays from 8:00-4:30. Please hold both of these dates until we contact you about your child’s date/time slot.

  • We will contact you after you've submitted the application and fee and will assign your child to a time block on one of the two Demo Days based on age/grade/gender. We have very little flexibility typically, so it is not possible for you to request a certain date or a particular time. Because Demo Days involve small groups of kids coming at the same time and each group is back-to-back, it is very important that you ensure your child is able to come on the assigned date/time.

When will we be notified about acceptance?

Admissions decisions are made thoughtfully, based primarily on the family’s and school’s shared vision regarding educational approaches and practices, as well as the child's eagerness to learn and ability to handle a rigorous curriculum within a collaborative community environment.

We are not able to accept every child that is a good fit for Long-View, as we have a large number of applicants each year. A small number of applicants are placed in our waitpool; if we have an unexpected opening after the admissions process concludes or during the school year, we go to our waitpool to fill that spot.

Notice of acceptance will arrive via email between February 16-26, with contract and deposit due within five days. Thus, if you have any lingering questions, it’s best to get those asked and answered before the acceptance window opens. Please let us know by February 15 if you require a visit or phone discussion to clear up any last minute questions.

Should you receive a notice of acceptance, you will need these items to complete your child’s registration within the five day window:

  1. Signed contract (both parents, if applicable, will be asked to sign via Docusign)

  2. Enrollment fee of $1000 (can be paid by check or online via credit card)

  3. Updated vaccination record — please procure this from your pediatrician ahead of time (all vaccinations must be completely up-to-date by start of school)

  4. Completed enrollment and health form (general information filled out via Docusign)

One of the things that makes Long-View stand out from the local independent schools is that we have a flat, transparent tuition model

Long-View's tuition is far below the typical local tuition rates because you aren't paying for buildings, extra staff, athletics, or a large range of grade levels.

We don't ask you to buy any supplies and we don't fund-raise. That's right! Everything is included.

Annual Tuition for 2023-24: $16,500

Annual Enrollment Fee for 2023-24: $1000

One-Time Tech Fee for 2023-24: $1000

*We do not raise tuition every year and typically our tuition remains stable for several years. However, we do expect to raise tuition for the 2024-25 school year.

Long-View admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national, and ethnic origin in administration of our educational policies, admission policies, and any other school-administered programs.
